Procedure for Registered Marriage in Bangalore, INDIA

I am writing this post from my personal experience on the complete procedure of getting registered marriage done at Bangalore. I don't take responsibility of any change that happens to this, or if you have to pay more at any of the steps. The post is entirely based on my experience with the process and here it goes, which I believe may be helpful for many people who want to get registered marriage done while staying in India.

Below are certain conditions that are entertained while registering your marriage in India:

1) Not Already Married
 - Both the partners of same religion.
 - Both the partners of different religion.

2) Already married
 - Both the partners of same religion.
 - Both the partners of different religion.

I am going to explain the most complicated process below that is the one in which both partners belong to separate religion and have not yet got married. Rest all others are much simpler than this one and you can suffice by wedding card, wedding pics, address proofs and photo identification cards. I couldn't find any proper online documentation of this process in which both bride and groom belong to different religion and want to get married, so writing it here:

Documents needed:

1) Address proof: It is important that for any kind of registeration of your marriage (irrespective of you are already married or not), you go to the registrar office that lies in your area of residence, or the area for which you have valid address proof. The valid address proof for the registration requires only ONE of the partners to have any of the following documents with them that are identified by Indian Govt and that claims their current residence in the city as well as in the area, :

 - Voter's ID
 - Ration Card
 - Driving License.
 - Passport

If you don't have any of these address proofs, you have to take any of the Govt sent document like your transport card and even rental agreement to the city's tehsildaar office and get a proper address proof document from them. For people residing in Bangalore, you can take the documents to the Tehsildar office at Majestic, Landmark Kid's shop and get the document done. Usually, it is done by brokers, who can charge an amount of 1500-2000 bucks from you for the document and make it done within 3-4 days. We paid an amount of 1500 initially, but for some unknown reason the broker asked us to pay extra 500 INR for the document after 3-4 days. I know, you might fume and thrash on this, but somehow that is how things are done in India.

However, the other partner also needs to have at least some address proof to claim his/her stay in India.

2) Passport size photographs (Total 8): You will need 5 passport size pics to attach initially in the documents while submitting your application and later 3, for the marriage certificates.

3) Photo identification documents: You can use your driving license, passport or any other govt. issued document that has your name and photo identification in it for this.

For unmarried couples of different religion, your marriage will be covered under Special Marriage Act and the process requires you to fill up two forms - one general form with your and your would-be's details, address, age, parents name etc. and the other specifically for Special marriage act that requires you to enter the same details and religion along with some signatures, declarations, photocopy of address proofs and photo identification cards. Both the forms cost Rs.30/- each.

Once the forms are submitted, you'll need to get them signed by the Sub-Registrar officer of the office. He will sign it after checking your identification cards and after seeing that all the details are correct. After his signature, your data will be fed in their online database and 5 printouts will be made, on which you'd have to attach your pics and sign on them. Once all this is done, you hand over the documents to the officer and have to pay an amount of Rs.33/- for which you'd get a receipt. Your application is submitted now.

For special marriage act in India, both the partners have to serve a notice period of 30 days, after which they can come and get married any time within a span of 90 days. During this notice period, the documents are validated for their addresses and other details. You will be intimated of any violation in case they find something contradicting your records, or if anyone objects to the marriage on legal reasons (like earlier marriage with someone and on some religious norms of their religion etc.). However, objections raised by parents, siblings and other family members without any legal proofs are not entertained.

Once the notice period is served, both the partners can go to the registrar office for wedding registration any time within the span of 90 days along with the original receipt, 3 witnesses and 3 separate photographs. They have to attach the pics and sign the marriage certificates. Three copies of the certificates are made; one is kept with the registrar office, one is given to the bride and the other to the groom. The witnesses also have to sign the certificate against their names. Once the signing is done, both bride and groom have to read a marriage oath in front of the officer, who after that declares them as man and wife. You will have to pay Rs.82/- for this for which you'd get a receipt as well.

P.S: Do not laminate your marriage certificate, as then it will not be approved by the Govt. Keep it safe the way it is. You can also later collect the scanned copy from the registrar office.
Also, every second Saturday is holiday at Bangalore's Registrar office - Koramangala. So, plan accordingly.

  4. Hi Shalini,

If your previous marriage was a registered marriage then it is better that you get divorce first from your previous partner, because it is a criminal offense to get married again without getting official divorce from your previous partner.

You can get it done privately after asking your previous partner and consult a divorce lawyer for this. All registered marriages have their proper data in the database, and if you get caught then your new marriage may also be considered illegal without previous divorce.

So, please take proper counselling before taking any step and follow accordingly. I wish you all the best and will pray for you!

  11. Hi Cali..Fist of all thx for the info on procedure of registered marriage in Bangalore..still i need some help/more explanation on this procedure. I am from pune(maharashtra) and shifted to Bangalore in March-09,and staying in rented house. My would be is from Bangarpet, which comes in Kolar district. We are getting married (fortunately)with both of our parrents permission, and planing to do register/court marriage. My would be is having all her documents for address proof(Pan Card, Ration Card,Voters ID)but in my case i do not have much solid proof of residence in Bangalore.Very resently (three months back) i prepared my rental agreement and also having HR letter from my company (MNC Pvt ltd catagory)as a address proof.addition to this on my salary A/C bank statement my currnt address is maintained. I do have my ration card and voter id for my pune address. i would like to know in this current senario, can we still do the court marriage? as per my knoweldge, for court marriage both the parteners address prrof is required, but i am not clear whethere both the addresses has to be from one city or it can be from 2 different city's? And if in case we opt for doing marriage in temple, and go ahead by registering it in Local registrar's office. will my above mentioned doucumets are suficient? or still i need to do it either in my City (i.e. Pune) or in my partner's place? It will be a great help if you can help in this regard! Thank you again...

  17. Hi,
This is Divya and unmarried. I stay in Mumbai (maharastra, India) and the person with whom I want to marry stays in Banglore (Karnataka, India). Is it possible that he can go alone and apply for registration of our marriage, as i reside in Mumbai and a student of MBA so its not feasible for me to go Banglore for registration of marriage and even not possible for him to come down to Mumbai for the same as he is working.
Please suggest us, some midway so we can register for marriage as soon as possible.

    Regards

  18. Hi Divya,

Actually you need to be there to sign the forms. He may get the forms and send them to you to get the signs, which you can send back. I'd suggest that you ask your boyfriend to clarify on this at registrar office. :)

    All the best!! :)

Tha nks a lot for the information provided. But. I visited the Koramangala office & though I've all the necessary documents (both Permananet Address Proof as well as Local Address Proof) and my bride has Permanent Address proof, they're asking Local Address Proof of her. I don;t know what to do as she has come only recently to B'lore & staying at a P.G. I thought documents from any one party shall suffice. can you kindly help?

  20. Cali,

I am planning to register my marriage to a girl without the knowledge of our parents although they have finally agreed to our union. We are doing this just in case they change their minds.
We plan to register our marriage under the special marriage act in Bangalore. Once we have a formal wedding back in our hometown (Kerala), we plan to let our parents carry out the marriage registration again so that we need not let them know the marriage was already registered. Is there any chance they may find out about the first registration when the try to register the marriage again ?

    Thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  21. @Anup

Ideally they should not ask for your bride's local address proof if they already have your local address.. You can tell them that your bride doesn't stay in Bangalore and stays in her Permanent address only, and that she has come here for wedding purpose only. Then she only has to give her permanent address proof.

    ReplyDelete
  22. @Anonymous

The data of registration is usually fed in their central database and if you've done a registered marriage before, the records are already there with them. I dont think it is advisable to get two different registrations for the marriage. It might cause complications later...

  29. Hi dear,

If you don't want your parents to know, then you need to arrange for your address proof that is somewhere else, instead of your parent's residence. The reason I am telling this is because in case of special marriage act, a notice is sent to the addresses that you've given. If you and your would-be are both of same religion, then there wont be any notice and you can easily get married without letting anyone know about it. I hope my answer helps..

  30. Hi Calicoaster,

Could you please answer to my following queries as I'm in the same situation as you have explained above(different religion):
    1. Is it required to give our permanent address apart from the current residential address in Bangalore, also for proof of residence?
    2. Since our parents are not willing for the marriage, will the registrar officer will be intimating our parents thought post - in case of different religion, I have read that they can do that also?
    3. Could you please give me the complete address of Registrar office.

    Thanks,
    Arun

    ReplyDelete
  31. @Arun

    1) You need to give your address where they can send the notice too. You can keep your current address as permanent address too, but you need to have proof for the same.

    2) Registrar office does send notice to the addresses that you provide to them. You need not give your parents' address there.

    3) It is important that you get your wedding registered in the registrar office of your location. e.g. we were staying in Koramangala hence we got our marriage registered in the Koramangala's registerar office which is located at BDA complex, Koramangala 1st block.

  40. Hi Joyce

There is no proof needed for witnesses to show that they belong to guy's party or girl's side. They just need 3 witnesses to be there and sign the document. You can get 3 witnesses of your own and ask one of them to sign from guy's side as a friend. This works without any hassle.. :)

I think you didn't read my article properly. I've clearly mentioned that house rental agreement won't work. You can get married in 3 days if you both belong to same religion, else you'd have to wait for 30 days. Please go through the article again to know the complete procedure.

I am krishna and i want to marry my girl friend who stay in uk and she is comming to india for our marriage . This marriage is done without our parents permission. I have read your article but still i have some doubts regarding them:
    1) we both are not the native of banglore . will any issue raise there?
    2) will the marriage be told to our parents by you?

    ReplyDelete
  43. Hi Krishna,

As long as you have proper address proofs in which One person's current address is of Bangalore and the other person has some address proof of her/his stay in India, there shouldn't be any problem at Bangalore's registrar offices at all.
Marriage is never told to your parents by the registrar offices, however, if you both are of different religion, you will have to serve a notice period of 30 days and your native addresses are being checked for verification. Apart from that, I don't think there could be any issues.

The difference in caste doesn't have any problem at the Registrar office, so if you both are Hindu, you can very well get married within a day if you have all proper documents with you!! :)

Thanks for the info. Got the Residence Certificate from Natraj. Just visted the Registrar of Marriages office here and got the 'Notice of Intended Marriage' forms. They say we should first start with the Notice and can get registred after 30 days. Is it the case ? Also looks like i need to pay 700 odd bucks for it.

Can you share your thoughts on this.

I went through some brokers who were around the office. From your post looks like I need to just pay for the forms and the fees.

Also not sure why they want us to serve the 30 day notice period, since we are both of same religion.

  52. For Guys requiring an address proof and thinking about going to Natraj,

He is associated with only Bangalore North Tahsildar office and the Residence Certificate he provides can only say you belong to Bangalore North regardless of what address proof you provide. (I m from BTM, the residence cert conveniently didnt have BTM name in it and the registrar noticed it right away)

I called Natraj again, he is all rude now - says its tough to get from Bangalore South and i need to pay another 1000 bucks. It is not his mistake and problem anymore.

Dont pay the money upfront to that guy till you get the Residence Cert and make sure all the details are correct.

Thank you so much for the detailed post . I was searching for a detailed post like this , now i got a perfect picture about this. But still i have some doubts regarding this. I will explain here my situation . It will be really helpful if you can give a suggestion.

I would like to marry my lover within a month. I am from Hindu community and my lover is Christian .Our parents are against this marriage, so I thought of doing register marriage then approach the parents after that.
I am staying in Tin factory (Near KR Puram Railway station) Bangalore in a rented house and working in CGI in contract with MAGNA InfoTech.
I have a Voter ID, Driving Licensee, PAN Card (All from my permanent address in Kerala). I have a Bike RC Book (Karnataka), Rental agreement, Bank statement (With Bangalore address). She had Voter ID from Kerala.
Where is the Register office located in my area?
Whether these documents are enough to apply for a marriage under special marriage act 1954, in Bangalore?
Will they send a letter to our house (permanent address)?
Do you know any agents nearby my area if I can approach them? (I think they can help me as I don’t have a valid ID proof from Bangalore)
If it is not at all possible here in Bangalore I need check nearby register office in Kerala. But I guess in Kerala they will send a letter to both parties house. Do you know anything about that?
